5 Commercial Cleaning Trends from the 2022 BSC Market Report

Pandemic-related lockdowns and re-openings have taken a toll on cleaning companies in the last two years. New variants and spikes and troughs have put a spotlight on the industry and picked up business, but also made it difficult to forecast the future.

The study involved data collected between February and March 2022 from 242 participants and looks at employment trends, market dynamics, technology, and overall business forecast. Participants were sent a link to an online questionnaire and were made up of Contracting Profits magazine subscribers. 

Here are five trends/themes from this deep dive into clean. 

 

1. Sales are expected to be up year over year

80% of BSCs surveyed said that they expect 2022 sales to be either slightly higher or significantly higher than 2021. Additionally 76% said that profits were expected to be either higher or significantly higher compared to 2021. 

2. Cleaning frequency continues rising

40% of BSCs have increased cleaning frequency year-over-year, while 58% have stayed at the same levels, and only 2% have decreased. 

Regular disinfecting of high-touch surfaces remains a top priority due to the pandemic.  

3. Some sectors are growing (and expected to grow) faster than others

Strong market segments right now included: 

  • Office buildings 
  • Property management firms
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Dental clinics
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Warehouses
  • Food processing facilities

While markets with high perceived future growth potential in the commercial cleaning space were:

  • Airports
  • Public transportation
  • Airlines
  • Bus and train stations
  • Sports stadiums
  • Gyms
  • Movie theaters
  • Casinos

4. Industry outlook remains optimistic

69% of respondents said that the added attention to cleaning from the ongoing pandemic will increase their customer base in 2022 and into the future. 



5. Plenty of room for improvement in green cleaning

In terms of green cleaning…green seal certified transparent

  • 54% of BSCs surveyed said that the majority of cleaning products they use are not considered green.
  • 6% admitted that none of their cleaning products are environmentally friendly. 
  • Only 2% said they are using 100% sustainable cleaning products across the board.
